Waste Infrastructure

The Village of Pender, Nebraska is currently upgrading its sewer treatment plant and collection system using funding from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, with the total project cost exceeding $10 million. These improvements are essential to maintain reliable service, meet environmental regulations, and protect public health and local water quality. To help fund the project, the Village Board approved an increase in sewer rates in 2025. As construction progresses, residents can expect periodic street closures while crews work to update underground infrastructure; while this may cause temporary inconvenience, it is necessary to complete these critical improvements and ensure a safe, modern sewer system for years to come.

Waste
Collection

The Village of Pender is currently partway through a major upgrade of its waste collection system. This project will repair and replace a significant portion of the wastewater system in Pender, including a roughly 12-block stretch of Whitney Street that serves as a main artery of the system that will be repaved. Penro Construction of Pender is the the general contractor for this project. This is a major component of the $10 million project listed above.

Flood Mitigation

The FEMA Flood Mitigation Project in Pender, Nebraska, is currently at a standstill while the Village awaits approval from the BRIC program to move forward.

Once approved, the project is expected to take approximately two years to complete and has an estimated cost of $7.5 million. Flood mitigation is a critical investment in protecting homes, infrastructure, businesses, and essential services from costly and dangerous flood damage.

Projects like this can reduce the risk of contamination to water sources, help prevent disruptions to roads and emergency response, and improve overall community safety. By investing in flood mitigation, the Village is working to reduce the risk of significantly higher repair costs in the future while building long-term resilience and stability for Pender residents and businesses.

LOCATE FLAGS

A locate flag is a small colored marker placed in your yard to show where underground utilities like gas, water, electric, or cable lines are located, usually after a request to 811 Call Before You Dig. Each color represents a different type of utility, and they are there for safety before any digging occurs. If you see them, avoid digging nearby and do not remove them until the work is finished, even if you didn’t request them, as they may be

for nearby construction.

Park Upgrades

The Village of Pender is investing in the future of its community park with new playground equipment, additional trees, and an expanded walking trail. These improvements are being developed in collaboration with the Park & Greenspace Committee, who have been working closely with the Village to advance park enhancements. The new equipment will expand recreational opportunities for children and families, while the tree plantings will provide shade, improve aesthetics, and support long-term environmental health. The new trail will encourage walking and outdoor activity, helping create a safer, more accessible, and more vibrant community space for residents of all ages.

Fire Hall
Bond Issue

Following voter approval of the bond, the fire hall project is moving forward, and Otte Construction of Wayne has been selected as the contractor for the project.

The new fire hall represents an important investment in the safety and future of our community. The facility will provide improved space and functionality to properly house emergency equipment and support our volunteer firefighters, helping ensure reliable emergency services for Pender and the surrounding rural area.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026. We look forward to sharing updates with the community as this important project moves forward.
